What Is Beacon Buddies — And Why We Built It
A big button, bright lights, and a mission to get kids outside
Beacon Buddies is a physical device that lets kids signal the neighborhood when they're heading outside. One press and the beacon lights up, sounds off, and rallies the crew. Here's why we're building it.
Remember when you were a kid and someone knocked on your door to ask if you could come outside? No text messages, no coordinating through parents — just a knock, a question, and suddenly you had a crew for the afternoon. That simple ritual built friendships, filled summer days, and created memories that lasted a lifetime.
The Problem We See
Today's kids are more connected digitally than ever, but less connected physically. Screens are the default after-school activity. Neighborhoods feel quiet. Parents worry about safety, and kids lack the spontaneous catalyst that used to get them out the door. The result: less outdoor play, less physical activity, and fewer of those formative neighborhood friendships.
The Beacon Buddies Solution
Beacon Buddies is a physical device — think of it like an "Easy Button" meets a Batman signal. It's a big, satisfying button mounted with bright LED lights and a speaker. When a kid presses their beacon, it sends a signal to every other beacon in the neighborhood network. Lights flash, a fun sound plays, and the message is clear: "I'm heading outside — come join me!"
Why Physical, Not Digital?
We intentionally built this as a physical device, not an app. Kids don't need another screen. They need something tangible, exciting, and independent. A beacon sitting on a shelf or mounted by the front door is a constant visual reminder: adventure is one button press away. It gives kids agency — they decide when to rally the crew, without needing a parent to send a text.
How It Works
Each household gets a beacon device. When any kid in the network presses their button, every connected beacon in range lights up and plays a sound. Kids see the signal and know: someone's outside. The beacons can also be configured with different colors or sounds per household, so kids learn to recognize who's calling. It's simple by design — no accounts, no passwords, no screen time.
Our Vision
We're not building a product that replaces parenting or forces social interaction. We're building a catalyst — a fun, physical nudge that lowers the barrier to going outside. We believe that when you make it easy and exciting for kids to rally each other, the natural magic of outdoor play takes over. Friendships form, adventures happen, and neighborhoods come alive again.
